Age d’Or – Film discoveries

Each year, during the two first weeks of July , the film archive invites cinephiles to the Age d’Or and Film discoveries competition. Since 2005, this event has been organised in partnership with the Brussels European Film Festival.

Since 1973 the Age d’Or prize rewards the maker of a film that distances itself from any kind of cinematic conformism.

Among the laureates figure such adventurous directors as Jean-Luc Godard, Bela Tarr, Manoel de Oliveira and Jia Zhang Ke. In 2006 this prize was awarded to Paz Encina for Hamaca Paraguay (Paraguay).

Since 1979, Film discoveries aims to select quality films from various international festivals, and shows them to the public, encouraging distribution by means of premiums. This event allows work by directors such as Jim Jarmusch, Abbas Kiarostami, Naomi Kawase or Carlos Reygadas to become discovered. In 2006 Day night day night by Julia Loktev (United States)and Sehnsucht by Valeska Grisebach (Germany) received awards.

The selected titles for l’Age d’Or /Film discoveries are presented in Flagey during the first week of July, concurrent with the European Film Festival. Thus around fifty otherwise unseen films are made available to the public.

The second week of l‘Âge d’Or /Film discoveries takes place at the Film Museum (bis).
